At SBEarth’s annual Upcycle night, students gathered for an evening of community, sustainability and crafting. The event inspired participants to reuse recyclable materials and make them into useful and decorative items, showing how everyday objects can be given a second life instead of being thrown away. Attendees created planters from plastic bottles, envelopes from newspaper, flowers from scrap paper and many other unique crafts all while learning about the importance of reducing waste.
The ideas for the activities were developed by club members during a dedicated planning meeting. In addition to the upcycling stations, students enjoyed tie-dyeing, typewriting, and live talent performances throughout the evening. The variety of activities ensured there was something for everyone, and organizers reported that all of the stations were successful because students had so many engaging options to choose from.
The event also served as a fundraiser for the club. Food and SBEarth shirts were sold to raise money for future events, projects and supplies needed. According to members of the executive board, Upcycle night helps students realize that recyclable materials can be transformed into works of art, gifts, and even useful items. The club hopes that participants left with a greater appreciation for sustainability and the small actions individuals can take to help the environment.
As SBHS’s environmental club, SBEarth works to raise awareness about climate change and promote environmentally friendly practices within the school community. Upcycle night, along with Coffeehouse, is one of the club’s largest annual events. Beyond just crafting, the event brought together students to celebrate the planet while reducing waste. Organizers plan to continue the tradition next year and hope even more students will attend. Participants can earn volunteer hours, support the club and take home plenty of handmade crafts. Overall another successful event for SBEarth!
