An evening full of memories, music, fun times, and a lot of dancing. Juniors stepped onto the boat dressed in their best suits and dresses, eager to see what the night had to offer. Excitement already filled the students before they even set foot on the boat, with cameras flashing all around and friends and family cheering nearby. Prom evoked connection within all the Juniors attending, as compliments flew all around from stranger to stranger. Juniors have been waiting for this moment, and it had finally arrived.
Juniors were not the only thing that started making way onto the ship; opinions, comments, and praises of the venue wandered around as eagerness for the event started to rise. Outside on the deck of the ship, Juniors lined the edge, all “fighting” for a chance to take pictures- ones they–and their Instagram accounts–would remember forever. By the time students had claimed their tables with their friends, the sun had started to set. “Watching the sunset on the boat with all my friends around me was, honestly, a part of what made the night so memorable. Being in the moment with friends and leaving everything else aside was honestly a relief. In that moment, I knew this night was going to be one to remember,” said one Junior.
Throughout the night, students flooded the dance floor. Living in the moment, students danced with their friends as if no one was watching, even if someone was. Class Advisor Ms. Anna Lehre said “I loved seeing all the kids piled up on one dance floor even though we had two. It showed connection, and that is what prom is all about; it really made me happy to see it.” Even though the dance floor was a small one, students still found a way to make room for everyone. Co-Advisor Ms. Kate Hanusosky, said, “my favorite part of the whole night had to be standing on the second floor, overlooking all the students dancing and singing.” She expressed that all the hard work for this event was all worth it in that moment.
Among the memorable moments was the moment Alyssa Herrera (‘27) and Ronal Flores (‘27) shared the crown. As students gathered around the dance floor, anticipation for who would win Prom King and Queen dawned over all the students. Whispers of who they voted for were shared around. At last, our King and Queen were crowned: “Alyssa Herrera and Ronal Flores!” A wave of applause followed as the couple made their way to retrieve their crowns. “I honestly wasn’t sure if I was gonna win or not, but my friends kept telling me they voted for me, so I knew I had gotten a good amount of votes,” said Alyssa, who also shared that she and Ronal have been dating for a couple of months, so to win Prom King and Queen together was a special experience.
With the final song played and the last picture taken, the night started to slow down; students held their mini debriefs–quiet talks of what they liked and what they didn’t. That night, everyone put aside their differences and enjoyed the moment as a community. Students were able to have a night away from the stress of school, being a regular teenager aside from the high standards they are usually held to. As the Junior class looks ahead to Senior year, the memories from Prom night will stay with them forever. So I guess what they say is true: time sails by when you’re having fun, and boy, did we ever!
