The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was a long awaited movie for many fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise across the globe. The movie covers the time period in between the original Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series. It was set to be premiered in partnership with Paramount in October of 2026. However, months before it’s scheduled release, the movie has over 80,000 views on Letterboxd and is being streamed through pirated services everywhere. Users on TikTok have already started posting edits with clips of the movie in surprisingly high quality resolution.
An anonymous X account, @ImStillDissin, first posted short 2 minute clips of the film that he had claimed to have received from Nickelodeon through an email. The user wanted Paramount to release an official trailer and threatened to stream the entire movie if no trailer released. He also posted a still from the movie’s end credits which contained previously undisclosed information about voice actors and cast members. This was then removed by X due to copyright infringement, but within 48 hours of the removal, the entire movie had already been spread across X and 4chan. Across the internet, fans had already pirated and watched the movie.
The leak has raised questions about whether it is fair for the team members who worked on the production of the movie for a long time to have no recognition for their work. Since the movie will not be appearing on Paramount+ any longer, the team will also not be able to get any credit for the work put into the movie.
Medha Nagaraj (‘27), a fan of the franchise, says “I’m worried that since nobody was paid from the leak of this movie, no more Avatar spinoffs will be made and the franchise will die.”
On the other hand, some say that Paramount deserves this setback because of some of the marketing choices for the movie that fans were not happy with. Paramount had pulled the movie’s release in theaters and instead had it set to be streamed through Paramount+. Many fans were unhappy with this idea because it took away from the franchise’s legacy and did not allow fans everywhere to enjoy the movie, because not everyone would want to purchase Paramount+ just to watch one movie. Others say that Paramount’s recasting of the original voice actors to match the ethnic and racial backgrounds of the characters took away from the real spirit of the show.
Many fans have wondered why Nickelodeon, or its parent company, Paramount have been silent about the situation. They haven’t claimed any hacke, although some sources claimed that they have launched an investigation to figure this out. Over the last few months, Paramount has already been under scrutiny due to it’s close relationship to President Donald Trump because of his friendship with CEO David Ellison and his father, Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle. It seems as though most fans have sympathy for the creative team behind the movie due to the underappreciation of their work in the movie now that is has been leaked earlier than scheduled.
Historically, movie leaks have caused discourse among many that are stuck between ethical considerations for the people that have put years of work into a movie and their enjoyment of spoilers long before the movie is released. Fans of Avatar believe that the only way for Paramount to come out of this situation is to acknowledge the leak and takes action into supporting their cast and crew. If the movie was still released in theaters, there is no guarantee that people would not show up.
