The girl track and field team excelled in their 2025-2026 track season. There were multiple personal records, new girls stepping in, and positive energy all around. This season was different from most though, starting off with having a new head coach: Mrs. Stephanie Greco. Her leadership and effort to make the team better showed and she was able to create the determination and power that the girls had this season.
Throughout the New Jersey Relay Championship Meet on January 17, South Brunswick participated in almost all the relays. Each runner and jumper had an important role to play and lived up to it very much. If you don’t know what a relay is, it is when all the points the athletes have earned in that event add up. There can only be two athletes per event in winter; when it is spring season you are allowed up to 3. Relays are not just about speed or how high you jump, through. The necessary teamwork, timing and trust play important factors into this. The Lady Viking showed up and out with their hard work coming together.
Many athletes, specifically the newcomers or underclassmen have stepped up this season. For example, Sophomore Natasha Kenny scored points in both the 1600 and the 3200! This is a huge accomplishment; especially as a sophomore. Who knows how much she will excel when she is an upperclassmen? Senior Alex Mensah also scored points in multiple events but a special victory was her taking first in high jump with a height of 5-4, which is her personal record!
There are many athletes that can be named who did amazing at state relays; everyone who was selected tried their best and really strived for greatness. Being selected for state relays is not the same as any other meet; you have to really catch the coach’s attention and put in the extra hours, take harsh criticism and have your eye on the goal. All of these factor into how you are as an athlete.
Junior Soumya Mehta said “It feels nice to represent a team that practices hard enough for us to be able to have the privilege of winning.” As an athlete of the team who witnesses firsthand how hard everyone works, I can say it was a deserved win (not in a biased way!).
The girls track team has had a cold winter; snow, rain, -1 degree weather. On top of all of this they still worked hard for this victory even without being able to practice on the actual track. Their long and hard workouts paid off in the best way possible.
In every student athlete, there is the stress of homework, clubs, sports and it is very tiring and leads athletes to burning out most of the time, but the girls track team constantly beats that stereotype by showing up and out for their team and themselves. This is a big win for South Brunswick and stay tuned for the 2026 spring season; who knows what power the girls track team is about to bring!
