After three years of consistent hard work and rigorous courses, seniors at South Brunswick High School start the process of applying to colleges and receiving word back. This process, though extremely stressful for a variety of reasons, will eventually end in relief. On Friday, May 1, SBHS hosted an event during all lunches to celebrate seniors who have finally made their commitments. This day is also known as Decision Day because it is when seniors have to decide on their college of choice. The celebration event was set up in the alcove and featured college merch tables for students to raffle off and win, a photo booth with the viking mascot, and a table covered in school-flags to take pictures with.
As you first entered into the alcove, there was an immediate rush of excitement. Students filled the entirety of the area–laughing, taking pictures, and playing games. Senior Zahra Akhtar (‘26) said, “Seeing everyone in their t-shirts together and taking pictures, along with the set up in the alcove was really nice–with all the flags and commitment things.” A special aspect of this day is that most every senior came to school wearing gear from the college they are committed to–bringing a sense of unity, spirit, and most importantly accomplishment. It was almost shoulder to shoulder walking through the area as seniors crowded to stand together for pictures or to check out the tables set up.
However, the event would not be complete without the effort and dedication of staff and administration at SBHS. At every station was found a staff member, whether it be a counselor or volunteer, helping students participate in activities, handing out goods, and taking pictures. Guidance Counselor Ms. Toronica Milligan worked to give students tickets as they entered the raffle activity. She said, “This event is something that we’ve put together and planned for the kids because we know they look forward to this day of finally being able to announce the college that they’re going to. And it’s really nice to see how they’re all excited and they can share that news with all of their friends.”
That being said, seniors happily spent their day celebrating one another’s accomplishments, capturing their last month spent together. Though this is the second year of the Decision/Commitment Day event at SBHS, it is likely to continue as future graduating classes celebrate all that they accomplished and all that lies ahead.
