On February 13 and 14, SBHS’ Concert Choir held its annual Singing Valentine’s event. Students were able to purchase singing valentines for teachers, friends, and staff that they would like to have the choir sing to during classes.
This year, there were a total of five song options: Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, Misty by Ella Fitzgerald, Can’t Help Falling in Love put together by The Pentatonix, Your Smiling Face by James Taylor, and A Thousand Years by Christina Perri. There was also a sixth option, which was a surprise song selected by the choir.
Students were able to buy a singing Valentine by picking up a form from Mr. Aldo Aranzulla in the choir room or from a member of the concert choir. The price for the performance and a card was $8 or $10 to include an additional flower. All proceeds directly went to the choir, to support the choir program’s needs such as their trips, music, and events.
During this time, the students are always excited, as this is one of the school's most awaited events each year.
Satvik Dhananjay said, “Singing Valentines is our most anticipated performance all year in the Concert Choir. It gives the choir a great opportunity to share the spirit of love across the halls and classrooms in the school. The smiles, laughter, and joy of everyone because of our singing makes the tradition rewarding, and the choir will continue to look forward to it for many years to come.”
On the two days of their performance, the concert choir kids were excused from attending their classes for the day to go around other classrooms throughout the school day to sing to other students. Each year, the students dress up festively, with their clothing ranging from different shades of pink, red, and white.
When the choir begins singing in a formation surrounding the student, oftentimes, the recipient will have one of two typical reactions: flushed embarrassment or happiness. The same goes for teachers, with students being extra excited to see teachers as the recipients of the singing Valentine because oftentimes they do not expect it.
Choir director Mr. Aranzulla said, “I hope people enjoy the performances; this is the event that choir students look forward to the most when joining the Concert Choir—personally singing for people around the school. It’s also such a fun time for everyone in the school to hear the choir sing for their friends, teachers, and loved ones.”
