On Thursday, October 16, South Brunswick High School students and staff gathered at Valhalla Stadium to wrap up the Fall Spirit Week, celebrate the annual Homecoming game, and crown this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. The South Brunswick Vikings faced off against the Edison Eagles and came out on top in a close and exciting game.
The Spirit Week leading up to the Homecoming game was just as exciting as the night itself. It started with Sleeping Beauty Day on Monday (10/13) and Tacky Tourist Day on Tuesday (10/14). Then, Wednesday (10/15) was Fairy Godmother Fiasco Day, where each class showed off their class color. Finally, on Thursday (10/16), students and staff wore pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness. The Senior Class of 2026 won the Spirit Cup, showing off their school spirit. Junior and Board of Education Representative Navya Jain said, “This was one of the best spirit weeks we have had by far, especially for the freshman who followed close behind the senior class.”
Before the game, the Marching Band took the field to perform their show At the Root of it All, which they later brought to the Ludwig Competition and won first place. During halftime, the festivities continued with performances by the Cheer and Dance Teams. Each group performed their routines for the crowd, riling up the crowd for the rest of halftime and the last two quarters. Senior and Student Council President Rishita Nossam said, “I was also in the box…announcing the class councils and student council floats, the spirit cup winner, and [the homecoming] royalty winners.”
The night also saw the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, with seniors Aayush Chebolu as King and McKenna Caffrey as Queen. When Caffrey was asked about her experience winning Homecoming Queen, she said, “I was honestly really shocked I won just because I didn’t think that many people knew me as a person, but I am so grateful and happy to have won with everyone there.”
The Vikings played a tough and close game against the Edison Eagles and came out on top with a final score of 14-13. Everyone involved in the night, including all the teams, members of student and class councils, staff members like the marching band directors, coaches, and activities coordinators, all put in several hours of effort into making the game a successful and fun night. When Special Education teacher and Student Council Advisor Mrs. Harlee Olsen was asked what her favorite part of the whole process was, she responded, “Getting to see the creativity of all of the kids. I mean, my favorite part of my job is working with kids and seeing all of the amazing things that [they] figure out how to do. So I think that’s it, working with the kids and seeing their creativity.”
