South Brunswick Schools
On May 2nd, 2025, Superintendent Mr. Scott Feder announced his retirement. In his retirement letter, Feder explained how he would officially retire on September 1st after which he will move to Rhode Island to be closer to his daughters, who currently live in New England.
Feder has had a 34 year long career in education, spending the last eight years as superintendent of the South Brunswick School District. Before this, he served as a K-8 Superintendent in Rumson and Millstone. In total, he has spent 16 years of his career as a superintendent, showing just how much experience and dedication he has placed on his work.
In an interview with The Viking Vibe, Mr. Feder went over his favorite parts of his job. “Every time I get a chance to interact with the students is always cool. I like reading to the kids and the elementary grades. The times I’ve been in some classrooms have been fun, in the high school, interacting with families has been pretty cool.”
Mr. Feder’s care for students is not only exemplified by his words, but his actions as well. The prime example of this would be the high amounts of effort taken to keep as few programs or classes from being cut during the 2024-2025 budget crisis.
When asked about what he thought his biggest accomplishment was, Feder said, “Managing the budget has been a giant accomplishment. We haven’t had to cut all the things you guys love, right? We haven’t cut any programs, we haven’t cut any sports. Our class size is still reasonable, our facilities are in decent shape. Doing all that while we’ve been in this crazy funding fight, I think it has been an accomplishment.”
Feder also said he would type a note for his successor, similar to the presidential tradition of leaving a handwritten note in the Oval Office.
He said, “My advice is gonna be to make the right decision, the best one you can knowing no decision will make everybody happy. That’s probably one of my main pieces of advice in leadership. You have to be able to be able to handle and manage the fact that every single decision you make is going to be seen as a bad one by somebody.”
In sharing advice, Mr. Feder also reflected on some challenges he faced in his time at South Brunswick, specifically the ones that tested his patience. He said, “If someone has an opinion, I don’t agree with, that’s okay. That’s democracy, that’s what it’s supposed to be. But when people absolutely lie on purpose for their personal agenda, that I lose my temper.”
Having been in South Brunswick for the first six years of his career in education, and now again for the last eight years, Feder spoke about the things he’ll be missing the most about the township.
Feder talked about how he would miss the camaraderie most. He said, “I have a lot of people I like to see everyday here! I really do enjoy my job, I enjoy coming here. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t get stressful, doesn’t get difficult but I enjoy it. I like taking care of this community in the way that I get to do it.”
As South Brunswick bids farewell to Mr. Feder and wishes him congratulations, his legacy will continue to guide our district forward.
